NYC Web installation by Tomas Saraceno
Time Cover by Artist JR
This powerful piece was unfolded by about 100 people in Lviv, Ukraine yesterday. The image of the girl is from about a month ago. The girl and her mother have since fled to Poland.
Aerial Photographs by Kacper Kowalski (Poland)
These photographs are part of Kowalski’s Head Series. “Heads is an educational project dedicated to children aged 3 – 10. Its goal is improve abstract thinking, spatial imagination and teach shifts in perspective.”
Kowalski is a trained architect but appears to fly his mini helicopter around often to capture patterns, natural designs and other abstract beauties from the sky. More here.
Hempcrete Blocks by Just BioFiber (Canada)
I have not used these highly sustainable building blocks yet but am intrigued by them. Here’s what I’ve learned:
Lightweight, yet strong (can be used to construct a 4-5 story structure) & can be cut w/ common saws/tools
Carbon Negative - absorb more CO2 than is used to create them + the interior structure is made of bio-resin
Have high insulation R-values, are fire-resistant + moisture & pest resistant
They have dedicated blocks for sub-surface foundations (waterproof) w/ R-70 Insulation
The holes in the middle align to become chases for electrical & plumbing
Install 30% faster than similar construction projects
They are made in Canada and are currently 8-11 months out due to high demand
Cranes
While Emily was donating blood I watched these two arms make compositions in the sky. This was my favorite. Enjoy the weekend.
Russia vs Ukraine Illustration for Aid Donations
Polish illustrator Pawel Jonca depicts what is hopefully a perfect metaphor for the current conflict. Jonca writes, "You can get the digital poster here, by paying ANY amount to support Ukraine."
Wooden House by studio ciguë (France)
Lightly touching the earth, generous overhangs and lots of glass. Another example of simple and elegant design and building. More here.
A-Frame w/ a Splash of Shipping Container by (TJOB) in Thailand
This design seems to be about controlling light and rain and providing views. I appreciate how experimental and low-tech this is. More here.
Seth Bossung (March 3, 1968 - Feb 1, 2021)
I love this picture of Seth from elementary school - there’s so much of older him in his younger eyes. I think we would have been friends at this age. Lots of love to everyone today.
3D Printed House (Austin, TX)
House Zero designed by Lake/Flato for ICON impressively demonstrates how to combine this new technology with modern warm materials. Love that they even printed the planter in front. More about this project here.
Go, Switzerland!
I feel like the world is getting behind this.
Excerpt from the NYTimes:
Switzerland, a favorite destination for Russian oligarchs and their money, announced on Monday that it would freeze Russian financial assets in the country, setting aside a deeply rooted tradition of neutrality to join the European Union and a growing number of nations seeking to penalize Russia for the invasion of Ukraine.
After a meeting with the Swiss Federal Council, Switzerland’s president, Ignazio Cassis, said that the country would immediately freeze the assets of Russia’s president, Vladimir V. Putin, Prime Minister Mikhail V. Mishustin and Foreign Minister Sergey V. Lavrov, as well as all 367 individuals sanctioned last week by the European Union.
UKRAINE
Help however you can. Here are two relief organizations:
C’mon C’mon by Mike Mills
Another beautifully directed film by Mills about what it is to be human. Watch trailer here.
Hong Kong Flora by Photographer Michael Wolf
SPAN smart electrical panel
Finally, a panel that gives the homeowner access to information and tools for managing energy. More here.
Small House by JRKVC (Slovakia)
I like how from every other angle (except the glass side) this is just another little shack maybe in the middle of nowhere. The inside is an odd little gem too. More here.
Visual Rhythm - Leyton House by McMahon Architecture (London)
This is a great example of the subtle power of rhythm in a project. Notice all the repetition throughout the int./ext. compositions. Voids pull your eyes all around this house as the light/shadows layer on top. More here on this elegant home.
Cake (Kalk AP) ebike
I like the direction electric motorcycles are going. These dirt bikes out of Sweden go about 40mph and can run for about 3hrs on a full charge. More here.
Casa Collumpio by Mach (Spain)
I appreciate how this seemingly bold industrial modernist steel & glass box mostly blends in with this hilly urban section of Barcelona. More here.
