Basilica de la Sagrada Familia - Antonio Gaudi (architect 1852-1926)

The construction of Gaudi’s Barcelona cathedral was begun in 1882, a quarter of the construction was complete by the time of his death. His masterwork is slated for completion in 2026, 100 years after his death. Watch a brief animation here depicting what’s remaining to be finished in a relatively short time period.

3D Mud Printing - Rael San Fratello (architect)

There’s something great about the idea of something as high-tech as 3D printing combined with something as low-tech as mud structures. Check out more about this project here from the highly experimental architect Rael San Fratello.

Airstream Fix-Up

An interesting rehab of an abandoned 1968 Overlander Airstream. See how Jorge Almada and Anne-Marie Midy reworked it here.

Shelving

There’s a level of organization and variety here that makes an otherwise sterile kitchen pop. The plants peppered into the mix are a nice touch too.

Charles Library in Philadelphia - Snøhetta

Here’s another project by Snøhetta (Norwegian Architects) that seems to embrace what a library can and maybe ought to be (i.e. community center, technology hub, meeting place, landmark, etc.). See and read more here about this project.

Simplified Kitchen

Here’s a good example of someone not spending lots of money on expensive cabinets, rather creating a series of shelves for their nice things.

Beverly Loraine Greene - Architect (Oct 4, 1915 – Aug 22, 1957)

Greene is credited with becoming the first African American woman licensed as an architect in the United States 1942. Read more about her here.

Earthships

Typically, Earthships are made using natural and mostly discarded materials (tires, bottles, cans, etc.). Check out this short video demonstrating some of the principles and elements incorporated into many of these organically designed structures - the grey water/vegetable production system is especially smart.

Richard Nickel - Architectural Photographer 1928-1972

Nickel spent much of his adult life, in Chicago, photographing buildings slated for demo. He was particularly obsessed with capturing Louis Sullivan works and would remove artifacts/details before complete destruction. He would ultimately meet his untimely death when Sullivan’s doomed Stock Exchange Building would collapse while Nickel was inside. See/read more about him here.

I like the idea of this system for ease of installation and the practicality of a swap-out - if a section or area fails. We plan to try a version of this on our rear flat-roof addition next Spring/Summer. See more here about this system.

This house was created in the 50’s as part of an experiment to see if homes could be designed/built out of low-cost materials to handle the growing population demands of post war America. Read more here about the case study program.

Makoto Suzuki - Architect

Wood stove, brick, cedar, recessed bookshelves, low ceiling/high ceiling and glass - these elements combined in this particular way make for a thoughtful space. See more about this project here.
