How many Swiss architects does it take to design a California winery for a Frenchman? Love Herzog & De Meuron’s uses of materials on minimalist structures. See more photos of the winery here.
Scavenger Hut - EERKES ARCHITECTS
Love how this project has only a few materials, some strong horizontal bands and clear vertical supports. See more by this Bainbridge WA architecture firm here.
SUNFLARE - FLEXIBLE SOLAR PANELS
This new technology comes in thin flexible sheets and now roof shingles. I’m excited to see what they do next. Read more about Sunflare here.
MAYAN THEATER
Built in 1930 and still one of the best places in Denver to see a movie. Check out more here.
Blank Studio Design + Architecture
Love the steel, glass and rust. Here’s more information on Blank Studio and this project.
Denver’s Union Station
It’s once again Denver’s transit hub, now connecting trains to DIA (airport) and light rail around the city. It’s also quite the bustling building with hotel, restaurants, etc. Check out more here.
Eero Saarinen - Architect (Finnish)
I like this fun picture of Saarinen working on the model for the iconic TWA terminal at JKF Airport. Check out more photos and drawings of the finished project here.
LOUIS KAHN - Architect
Kahn’s projects are architectural master works. The two projects I’ve visited so far (Salk Institute and the Exeter Library) made the hair on the back of my neck stand-up. See more about the Salk Institute here.
KELTON OSBORN - ARCHITECT/ARTIST
We love how Kelton Osborn (long-time friend) explores how things fit together. Check out more of his work here.
Cadence Design Studio
We love what our friends, Angelo and Nancy, are working on at Cadence Design Studio. See more here.
SHELTER
This is one of those books I refer to a couple times a year. It looks at how humans create dwellings and more, through an anthropological lens - studying early hut techniques to community water and sanitation. It’s just a good reminder that people have been doing this for a long time and there are no right answer but lots of great shared ideas.
FOLK ART MUSEUM (NYC) - BY WILLIAMS AND TSIEN ARCHITECTS
This museum (across from MoMA) closed controversially after only being open for 13 years, however, it’s one of the more thoughtful building in which I’ve been. Check out more projects here by the impressive husband and wife and team - Tod Williams & Billie Tsien.
OLD DENVER
Love to see photos of Denver before its relatively recent transformation.
Denver Graffiti
As Denver’s gotten hipper, the graffiti’s gotten more sophisticated and has been popping-up in more places, often commissioned. In this piece, I like how the smoke emminating from the building light fixtures? fills the stair recess and reveals the blackness of space, may need to see this one at night, in case the stars are glow-in-the-dark.
There are plenty of other favorites around 34th & Larimer - I’ll post them throughout the year.
Robert Marino - Architect
I love how Robert Marino uses materials, shapes and simple moves to support big ideas, more here.
Rick Joy - Architect
Love his rusty steel boxes in the desert - check out more of his work here.
