Interesting how the projects that collect water to then redistribute it consider so many other things. Read more.
Schwinn
Longtime good friend, Scott Mourer, generously passed along this vintage black frame. It’s nicely turning into the sibling of the white frame he gave me 7 years ago. Can’t wait to go on more rides with the people in my life.
Eco Cabanas by Gracias Studio (Mexico)
Lightly set on a hillside overlooking vineyards. If it’s not already the case, I could imagine these pods with a centrally located main lodge comprised of kitchen, dining hall, lounge, etc. Night seems like it could be a bit treacherous with little lighting and no railings - maybe that adds to the excitement. Japanese Joinery
Though more time consuming, it can be highly functional and far more elegant than most fasteners. Years ago, I saw a fence being constructed in Vermont in which the joinery was designed to hold things together but also to shed water through internal slopes.

I expect (during & post-pandemic) this is likely a direction designers and homeowners will move with backyard accessory structures. Read more.
2nd Steel window frame/trim on our addition
Hayden welded this while we were out-of-town a few weeks ago and we recently installed it. Even got a nice drip edge subtly across the bottom. Will be discussing using some version of this on a new project next week.
Pedaling through California’s Redwoods - Rail Bikes
This seems like a fun way to re-use abandoned train lines, get a little exercise in a low impact way and absorb a little nature. Also feels a touch science-fictiony. Read more.

Bamboo ARC in the Balinese jungle by Ibuku

CABINS & LODGES • KAVGOLOVO, RUSSIA Architects: AB CHVOYA
This is the first modern residential project out of Russia that I’ve run across. It’s near St Petersburg, which is only a few hrs from Finland, that would’ve been my guess as to where it was located. More here.

Beutler’s Band Bash Benefit for ALS
Just got off the phone with Towson High School classmate, friend, extraordinary human Chris Beutler. He was diagnosed in 2019 with ALS and is spearheading this fantastic way of gathering the people that he’s worked with in the creative world to help raise money and awareness for people and their families coping with ALS. There will also be a live streaming component for those that cannot attend in person. Here’s more information. I’ll post links and updates as we get closer to date of show.
Horizon House (Nevada) by Lake Flato Architects
A larger house than I typically am drawn to but the rammed earth walls of this structure against the backdrop of the desert are very very nice. Read more.
LARRY LARS
Over the weekend, Piper and I attended the memorial for Lars in Almont, CO (near Crested Butte). We saw and spent time with many familiar (and new) lovely people (maybe 150 or so). The memorial (which was under a large outdoor shelter) was beautiful and simple, mostly it was friends and family getting up and sharing stories, reading poems, recalling memories, etc. with some common threads - Lars had a thirst for adventure, his creativity and problem solving were deeply admired and he had been so generous and thoughtful to so many with his time and energies over the decades. Lots of laughing, lots of tears and some more tears.
I read the poem below that I had written.
